The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business is a 180 – credit qualification that aims at deepening the specialist work-related focus from the BTEC Level 3 90 – credit Diploma and the BTEC Level 3 Diploma. This qualification has the potential to prepare and equip learners for appropriate direct employment in the vocational sector. This qualification is also suited for those learners who wish to enter a specialist area of employment or advance to a higher education foundation degree, HND, or other professional development programme. Rules of Combination for Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Excluded Diploma in Business

If you want to combine the units for BTEC Level 3 Excluded Diploma in Business, the center has the responsibility to make sure that the rules of combination are followed to the latter. The rules of combination for this qualification are as follows:

  1. Qualification credit value is a minimum of 180 credits
  2. Minimum credit to be achieved at, above, the level of the qualification is 135 credits
  3. Compulsory unit credit is 40 credits
  4. Optional unit credits are 140
  5. A maximum of 35 optional credits can be derived from other Level 3 BTEC units to meet the local needs


Since the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Excluded Diploma in Business is a 180 credit qualification, it requires 1080 guided learning hours. It comprises four mandatory units plus optional units that give a combined total of 180 credits.

Assessment and Grading

Units of Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Excluded Diploma in Business are all internally assessed. The assessment is criterion-referenced based on the attainment of the specified learning outcomes. As such, each unit under this qualification has a specified assessment and grading criteria that are used for grading. Besides, a summative unit grade is awarded as Pass, Merit, or Distinction.


Grading Domains

The development of the grading criteria is done concerning grading domains that are represented by indicative characteristics. For this qualification, there are four grading domains:

  • Application of knowledge and understanding
  • Development of practical and technical skills
  • Personal development for occupational roles
  • Application of generic skills

Calculation of the Qualification Grade

The pass grade is awarded to those who achieve the minimum eligible credit value specified by the rule of combination.

  • Qualification Grades above Pass Grade

Learners are awarded a Merit or Distinction qualification grade by the aggregation of points acquired after successful attainment of individual units. The points available are dependent on the grade attained, and the credit size of the unit. Below are the points available for credits achieved at level 3 and unit grades.

  • Pass – 7 Points per credit
  • Merit – 8 Points per credit
  • Distinction – 9 Points per credit

Mode of Delivery

The Edexcel does not have a definite mode of study for the BTEC Level 3 Excluded Diploma in Business. However, the centers can develop their mode of delivery and can offer this qualification either in full time, evening only, part-time, or distance learning. Regardless of the mode of delivery, the learner must have access to the resources identified in this qualification.



This qualification is designed to prepare the learner for employment in a specific occupation area. As such, the physical resources ought to align in support of the delivery of the programme and proper assessment of the learning outcomes. The staff delivering the programme should be up-to-date and familiar with the current practices and standards in the sector concerned.
